What free includes: everything — there is no paid version. Multiple style variations, block patterns, full-site editing.

The trade-off: it’s a canvas, not a business toolkit. There are no ready-made service sections, mega menus or WooCommerce extras, so expect to assemble pages from patterns yourself.

2. GeneratePress — the developer favourite

GeneratePress has built its reputation on discipline: tiny footprint, clean semantic code, and accessibility baked in. It scored 98/100 in our test and is a favourite foundation for developers and agencies that add their own components on top.

What free includes: solid typography, colour and layout controls in the Customizer, block editor support, and compatibility with Elementor and Beaver Builder.

The trade-off: the best parts — the Site Library of importable designs, hook-based Elements, and advanced header options — live in GP Premium. The free theme is fast but visually plain out of the box.

The trade-off: content blocks (hooks), advanced mega menus and some WooCommerce extras (like off-canvas filters) require the Pro version.

Best for: modern business sites and small WooCommerce stores that want premium-feeling design for free.

4. Kadence — best free header/footer builder

Kadence’s standout is that its drag-and-drop header and footer builder is free — something most rivals charge for. Combined with the Kadence Blocks plugin and its starter templates, you can assemble conversion-focused business pages quickly. It scored 95/100.

What free includes: header/footer builder, starter templates, spacing/typography controls, WooCommerce support, and the powerful free Kadence Blocks plugin.

The trade-off: hooked elements, mega menus and conditional headers are Pro; some of the nicest starter templates require paid blocks.

Neve from Themeisle takes a mobile-first approach — layouts are designed for small screens before desktop — which shows in its consistent mobile scores (94/100 in our test). It’s also one of the friendliest themes for beginners.

The trade-off: the builder rows and starter-site selection expand significantly in the Pro version; blog layout options are limited in free.

OceanWP packs more built-in options than anything else here — deep WooCommerce controls, popup login, sticky elements — which is exactly why it scored a still-respectable 89/100: more features mean more code.

What free includes: extensive Customizer settings, strong WooCommerce styling (quick view, floating cart bar), builder compatibility.

The trade-off: functionality is split across many extensions, most of them paid; if you only need a fraction of the features, a lighter theme will be faster.

Best for: feature-dense e-commerce sites whose owners want settings for everything without custom code.

10. Hello Elementor — the blank canvas

Hello is intentionally almost nothing: a ~6KB shell whose whole job is to get out of Elementor’s way. Its 88/100 score reflects Elementor’s own assets rather than the theme — Hello itself adds virtually zero weight.

What free includes: the theme itself, plus free Elementor for page design.

The trade-off: headers, footers and templates require Elementor Pro’s Theme Builder (or a plugin workaround) — without it you have no real site chrome. You’re committing fully to the Elementor ecosystem.
